Is dark chocolate healthy for liver?

Hepatology

Dark chocolate has been hailed as a superfood because of its antioxidant properties, known to benefit Heart Disease and Stroke. Cocoa beans, from which dark chocolate is made, are rich in bioflavonoids, which have the highest antioxidant level compared to other food sources.

Many studies have begun to investigate the potential benefits of dark chocolate on the Liver. It was found that dark chocolate reduces damage to the blood vessels in patients who have suffered scarring on the Liver due to excessive drinking or Liver disease. In addition, dark chocolate reduces blood pressure in the Liver as it contains high levels of antioxidants, which negate the effects of damaging particles from the body.

One study was able to show a clear association between eating dark chocolate and portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the Liver) and the potential to minimize the onset and impact of end-stage Liver disease and Liver Failure.

Cirrhosis is scarring of the Liver as a result of long-term, continuous damage to the Liver. In Cirrhosis, circulation in the Liver is damaged by oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant systems. After a meal, blood pressure in the abdominal veins usually increases due to increased blood flow to the Liver. In Cirrhosis, any further rise in pressure can cause them to rupture and bleed.

Another study found that polyphenols contained in dark chocolate could slow disease progression in Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), the more serious form of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), characterised by excess fat buildup in the Liver.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are considered of primary importance in the progression of NAFLD. Consuming dark chocolate can halt oxidative stress and hepatic inflammation seen in NASH, which ultimately leads to Liver failure. Thus, dark chocolate could halt disease progression.

A daily dosage of 30 g of dark chocolate for 12 weeks in patients with NAFLD produced a significant decrease in body weight and BMI, significant risk factors for developing NAFLD. The same study found that HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol that protects the Heart) level increased in NAFLD patients indicating a benefit in the lipid profile. Type 2 diabetes is often found in persons with NAFLD. The antioxidants in dark chocolate help the body use its insulin more efficiently to help control blood sugar. As a result, it helps decrease insulin resistance, the driving factor of type 2 diabetes.

Another interesting finding by a neuroscientist found that a small square of dark chocolate melted on the tongue 20 minutes before eating triggers a hormone that signals a feeling of fullness to the brain so that the meal portion consumed is less. This could again be beneficial in people watching their weight or avoiding the risk of Liver disease.

Notably, chocolates other than dark chocolate contain less cocoa and are not as beneficial. Many dark chocolate brands have over 70% of cocoa, while milk chocolates contain about 20-30% of cocoa solids. So, for Liver health, choose dark chocolates.

Admission Guide

Arrange for an emergency contact & caregiver Planning also involves, taking care of the insurance formalities, if any. And making provisions of leave/absence from work. We encourage our patients to ask enough questions of their doctors & other staff to fully understand every small detail & requirement of their hospitalization.

Surgical intervention is often necessitated to help a patient overcome sickness and resume normal activities. Surgeries could be emergency procedures or elective procedures. In the case of the former, the situation allows for little preparation. However, in latter cases, it is advised that patients be well-informed and well-prepared to ensure improved results. Preparation of surgery ought to involve the following, Detailed discussions with your doctors on the need for surgery. Complete understanding of the procedure and outcome. Undergoing relevant medical investigations for the surgery. Seeking insurance approval and/or arrangement of funds. Preparation for surgery also involves the mental readiness of a patient and in some cases the consent and approval of the immediate family. FAQ

  • What must I bring along for hospitalization?

The list of items to be brought for hospitalization at Gleneagles Hospitals includes - a health insurance card, medical records (current & previous), investigation reports and consultation/prescriptions from the OPD. Additionally, patients are also encouraged to bring some of their personal items such as glasses, hearing aids etc., but are advised to refrain from bringing expensive jewellery, watches and other such valuables. We encourage you to come light and only with the most essential items to make your stay easy & hassle-free.

  • What must I expect during the hospitalization?

Hospitalization is a time for you to receive treatment, rest and recuperate. Patients often consider only the first part and overlook the remaining two. The treatment could be clinical, investigative and may involve a small procedure or major surgery (depending upon the case). The major part of the hospitalization stay will be allocated to the treatment part. However, a vital component of your hospital stay is also to be able to rest & recuperate. Allowing the body sufficient rest from everyday stress is vital to the treatment course.

  • Can the patients have a care-giver and receive visitors?

At Gleneagles Hospitals, we encourage you to bring along one caregiver who is available with you at all times. This could be a close relative or family member or a personal friend. We understand that your health is important to your friends and loved ones and they would have the desire to visit you to know of your well-being. We allow visitors at designated hours, in a manner that is not disturbing to the other patients. Visitors may not be allowed for highly critical cases and patients in intensive care.

  • What is the expected outcome of hospitalization?

The expected outcome of hospitalization can and should be discussed with your respective doctor prior to admission. Each patient could have a different threshold limit to be relieved from the hospital. It is important to note that the end of hospitalization is not the end of the treatment cycle. You may require subsequent visits, medication and consultation to complete the overall treatment and overcome your sickness. The end of hospitalization simply means that you no longer require constant monitoring and can rest at home or undertake daily activities.

Going Home

Going Home

No hospital stay, however comfortable, can match the comfort of your own home. We at Gleneagles Hospitals understand your desire to head home at the earliest possible. We factor in your eagerness to return to the comfort of your home against the need you may have to stay in the hospital for observation, treatment and/or a possible contingency. Rest & recuperation can be achieved at home, but in certain cases, it is important to have a sterile environment with constant observation for a few days. Before returning home you must also have a thorough understanding of the care that must be ensured at home and the subsequent visits you ought to undertake. A pre-discharge checklist provided herein gives you a brief snapshot of the things you must consider & complete. Please note, discharge from the hospital is neither the end of the treatment cycle nor a complete cure, it is an important milestone with a few more before you are fully healthy & well.

And therefore, encourage you to bring along one caregiver who is available with you at all times. This caregiver should be a close relative or family member or personal friend. We allow visitors at designated hours. The visitors are, however, discouraged to visit patients in intensive care or undergoing critical procedures for the benefit of the patient. Also, visitors must keep in mind other patient rights and their responsibilities while visiting.

  • What is the expected outcome of hospitalisation?

Leaving the hospital ideally means complete recovery. But for major cases, it's about achieving specific goals. Understand expected outcomes. End of hospitalisation isn't always end of treatment. More visits or medication might follow.

  • Why is a surgery necessitated?

The need for surgical intervention differs from case to case. However, in most cases, the fundamental principle is that the condition requires excision, suturing, grafting, bypassing and other such procedures – which constitute surgery. Doctors will opt for surgical intervention if it is likely to quicken recovery, improve chances of recovery and help the patient have a better chance of overcoming the disease.

  • Who will perform the surgery?

Your Surgeon will discuss surgery details. They lead a specialised team including nurses, paramedics, and other specialists. Anaesthesia will be monitored by an Anaesthetist.

  • What will happen on the day of surgery?

On the day of Surgery, you will be prepped in sterile robes, intubated if needed, and undergo final tests. No food from midnight. The family waits in the surgical area. Monitors are applied for Heart Rate and Blood Pressure.

      Before Surgery:

    • No food or drink after midnight.

    • If medication is needed, take minimal water.

    • Remove items like hairpins, contacts, dentures.

    • Bring essentials if admitted later.

  • What kind of anesthetic will I be given?

The choice of pain relievers and anaesthesia is decided based on the nature of the surgery, the patient’s condition and the recovery options post-surgery.

  • How long does it take to recover from surgery?

Typically, an overnight stay in post-surgical intensive care allows a patient to recover sufficiently from the surgery. With anesthesia waning the patient may experience mild grogginess, pain etc.

Your surgeon will let your family/friend know how you are doing and answer questions, letting them know whether you require hospitalization or whether you will be discharged home.
