Sprains are the most common orthopaedic injuries. A sprain is a ligament injury usually caused by trauma to a joint by overstretching of muscles. Learn how to treat minor sprains & what to do when you come across such emergencies at home by Dr V V Satyanarayana, Consultant - Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Most of us come across these sprains, strains & minor fractures doing household activities. Some of the sprains and strains heal completely with adequate treatment by applying first-aid for all sprains and strains i.e. R.I.C.E.

  • R - Resting the healing limb with the help of any splint which is available at home
  • I - Applying an ice pack or ice cubes in towel to reduce the pain and swelling
  • C - Compress limb with the help of compression bandage or wet towel to reduce swelling
  • E - Elevating a sprained ankle, arm and wrist to reduce the flow of blood in the limb.

After taking the following measures the patient should be taken to the nearby hospital for further treatment.
