In today's sedentary lifestyle, the incidence of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, etc. is gradually increasing in the middle age group. In the long run, these lifestyle-related diseases are affecting the major organs of the body like the heart, brain and one of them is the kidney. Watch this video by Dr Sandeep Reddy, Senior Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician, Gleneagles Aware Hospital, Hyderabad to know more about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). When one has these long term health-related issues and kidney dysfunction occurs, that gives rise to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Chronic Kidney Disease is defined as a GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) of less than 90 ml per minute with or without urinary abnormalities. When CKD occurs in any patient, there is an inexorable progress to stage 5 in the majority of the patients. Once CKD starts, 80 to 90% of the patients land up with CKD stage 5. The maintenance of CKD stage 5 patients is very problematic when it comes to the cost and age group. When young patients face CKD stage 5, it is associated with a high treatment cost and morbidity and mortality. Once the patient is diagnosed with CKD stage 5, the options for management are either dialysis or renal transplantation.
