Time-Critical Dual Lung Transplant Successfully Performed at Gleneagles BGS Hospital

Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Kengeri, successfully facilitated the transfer of dual lungs from KIMS Hospital, Mahadevpura to Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Kengeri, with the crucial support of Namma Metro and the Bengaluru Police, ensuring a swift, safe, and time-critical journey for a dual lung transplant.

Donor Details:

The donor was a 45-year-old female, O-negative blood group, declared brain dead following a road traffic accident (MLC) with severe traumatic brain injury at KIMS Hospital, Mahadevpura.

Recipient Details:

The recipient is a 40-year-old female, B-positive blood group, diagnosed with interstitial lung disease and end-stage lung fibrosis, who had been on ECMO support for the past two months while awaiting transplantation.

To ensure seamless movement, the Bengaluru Police created a green corridor from KIMS Hospital to KR Puram Metro Station, and again from Kengeri Metro Station to Gleneagles BGS Hospital, enabling uninterrupted transfer at critical points of the journey.

The lung retrieval was performed by Dr. Umesh Nareppa, and the dual lung transplant surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Balasubramaniam Govini, along with Dr. Umesh Nareppa, Dr. Nakul Mahesh, Dr. Sharanya Kumar, and Dr. Manjunath P H, Consultant – Interventional Pulmonologist.

Dr. Balasubramaniam Govini said,

“In lung transplantation, time is life. The combined support of Namma Metro and the police green corridor ensured the organs reached us in the best possible condition.”

Dr. Umesh Nareppa added,

“This successful transplant reflects what is possible when hospitals, civic systems, and law enforcement work together with a shared goal of saving lives.”

The recipient is currently stable and making a good recovery under close medical supervision.
