Stroke cases amongst young adults at the peak during pandemic; up by 100% – Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai

Mumbai, 28th October 2021: Stroke is the third leading cause of death in India, with the incidence of neurological disorders doubling in the recent past. Data from Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, cited 100% rise in stroke cases amongst people below the age group of 50 years during the covid pandemic (2020-2021). With incidence of stroke being higher in men than women, experts attribute this increase to many lifestyle factors such as stress, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, high cholesterol and unmanageable blood pressure. To address this need and provide a detailed outlook on Stroke Management, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai has launched a campaign “#NoStrokeForMe” on the eve of World Stroke Day.

The campaign launch of “#NoStrokeForMe” was graced by Mr. Vishwas Narayan Nangare-Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) as Chief Guest and renowned Marathi Cinestar Mr. Ashok Saraf as Guest of Honour. Dr Shrish Hastak, Regional Director Neurology, Stroke and Neuro Critical Care and Dr. Nitin Dange, Incharge – Interventional Stroke Unit & Senior Consultant Neuro Surgery addressed the police force, shedding light on the importance of creating awareness on stroke, laying emphasis on 4-and-a-half-hour window to save a life, extended window period of 24 hours in selected stroke patients and other steps to prevent disability in a patient suffering from stroke.

The hospital also felicitated real life heroes who brought their loved ones on-time and kept in mind the Golden hour for stroke. Dr Shrish Hastak, Regional Director Neurology, Stroke and Critical Care, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel said, “A stroke in the human body occurs when the supply of blood and oxygen is interrupted and hence it is time sensitive. At the event today, we felicitated family members and care givers of stroke patients who recognized the symptoms and rushed them to the hospital well in time ensuring that they were administered effective treatment at the right time. Timely action helped save life of patients from varied ages.” Dr. Hastak is the first doctor to setup a stroke unit in Western India, launched a helpline number and website for stroke.
