A 43 -year- old road accident victim donates 6 organs, to save people with chronic illness

~ The patient admitted at BGS Gleneagles Hospital gave a new lease of life to 6 people ~

Bangalore August 6th 2021: A 43-year-old man from Karnataka battled for his life bravely for 7 days after a severe road accident and succumbed to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Even during the traumatic phase, the family of Mr Nanjundaiah decided to donate his 6 organs and save the helpless patients waiting for organs. Mr Nanjundaiah was admitted to the hospital on July 26th in a feeble condition, with severe head injuries. After learning his critical heath condition, a team of Neurologists, intensive care unit, orthopaedic surgeon and nurses gave him robust care and provided immediate medical attention, however he succumbed to traumatic brain injury on August 2nd, 2021. Organs including Lungs, Kidney, Liver,Heart Valve, Corneas, Skin of the patient were distributed through Jeevasarthakathe out of which 2 organs, including a kidney and liver were used to treat patients admitted at BGS Gleneagles Hospital waiting for transplants on the same day.

According to the recent research by WHO approximately 1.3 million people die every year due to severe road accidents. It is observed that majority of the death causes due to road traffic injuries and are seen more among children and young adults between the ages of 5-29 years. It is believed that these accidents can be curbed to an extent by adopting Safe System Approach and right medical intervention. According to the health expert’s right medication at the right time for Traumatic Brain injury is the vital tool for the survival of these patients.

It is believed that during the accident only a portion of the neurological damage occurs, which can be revived to an extent with immediate medical support.

Mr Nanjundaiah, a 43-year-old farmer from Bidadi, met with a road accident and was admitted in an unconscious state on July 26th 2021. Doctors performed immediate CT brain scans to understand the nature of the injuries. The doctors learned that he had diffuse axonal injury (where the brain rapidly shifts inside the skull due to the accident), Temporal bone fractures, subdural hemorrhage in the right and left frontotemporal (blood collects in the brain’s surface beneath the skull) and Post traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Additionally, the patient also had clavicle fracture (break in the collarbone). He was under rigorous neuro intensive care with proper physiotherapy, appropriate medication and was under mechanical ventilator support.

Dr N K Venkataramana: Director Of Neurosciences, BRAINS: said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with severe brain injury. Despite all the efforts, brain function could not be revived. After a detailed discussion with the family about the brain death, they have magnanimously decided for the organ donation. This act of generosity has given fresh lease of life for six people.

All the organs were distributed through Jeevasarthakathe and the liver and kidney were used to the patients at BGS Gleneagles Hospital, who were suffering from irreparable kidney and liver disease.
